In recent years, the field of dental lab technology has witnessed remarkable advancements, revolutionizing the way oral health is managed. Cutting-edge technologies, such as digital impression scanners and computer-aided design (CAD) software, have replaced traditional methods, offering precision and efficiency in creating dental prosthetics. Also, there are many dental lab technician courses available all over Kerala mainly in Cochin. Many dental lab technician institutes are getting flourishing all over Kerala. So, go with the right course and institutes, where you can find proper education and experience in the field you study.

One notable development is the integration of 3D printing in dental labs. This technology enables the fabrication of intricate dental components with unparalleled accuracy, reducing production time and enhancing the overall quality of prosthetics. Dentists and technicians now have access to a diverse range of materials compatible with 3D printing, allowing for customization based on patient needs.

Additionally, the adoption of intraoral scanners has streamlined the impression-taking process, eliminating the discomfort associated with traditional moulds. This not only enhances patient experience but also contributes to more accurate and detailed digital models.

The rise of computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) has further transformed dental lab workflows:

CAM systems automate the fabrication of dental restorations, from crowns to bridges, ensuring consistent quality and minimizing human error. This shift towards automation has increased the productivity of dental labs, enabling them to handle larger volumes of cases efficiently. Moreover, advancements in materials science have led to the development of innovative biomaterials for dental prosthetics. Stronger and more aesthetically pleasing materials are now available, offering improved longevity and a more natural appearance. This addresses not only functional aspects but also cosmetic concerns.

Courses related to dental fields are always worthwhile and can find jobs easily too. Not only in our country, but you can also move abroad for jobs related to the dental field after completing the course. Try to find institutes that provide placement support to the students so, we can easily get into the career right after our studies. Mainly at Cochin, we can find many dental lab technician courses with experienced faculty so, just go for it. From digital impression scanners to 3D printing and advanced materials, these developments are reshaping the landscape of modern dentistry, providing both practitioners and patients with unprecedented benefits.

A dental technician, who is an expert at making artificial dental prosthetics is known as a ceramic technician, or more precisely a dental ceramic technician. The job isn’t quite that different from a normal dental laboratory technician but requiring quite the bit of skill.

Your job

A dental ceramist must create ceramics and prosthetics. That’s essentially the job. You create dentures, crowns, bridges and those kind of stuff. You will also act as a mediator between the patients and the dentist himself because patients are more likely to be comfortable with you than the dentist.

Your job requires much skill as each patient and their requirements are different. This requires versatility that you must acquire. The job requires you to work with a lot of people — patients, dentist, other technicians.

More to the job

Since the field is ever expanding, you can’t limit yourself to traditional ceramics. A patient’s satisfaction is your duty. And computers can give that precision which human hands lack. So, you may have to gain some information on 3D modeling and making ceramics with the help of the digital world.

You must also help patients with the prosthetics if they are removable. You have to guide them, if one were to say, on the proper way to use their new, amazing teeth.

How do you become a dental ceramic technician?

Get a degree

Just like a normal career field, having an undergraduate degree in the course is one way. It is the norm. An undergraduate degree would prepare you for what lies ahead. An undergraduate degree might also allow you to specialise in something, adding to your skill. You could go for dental ceramics which might give you an edge.

Getting skilled in such specialised areas might help you find work later on under dentists who are looking for a person with a specific skillset.

A certificate programme

If you don’t want to bother with an undergraduate degree for some reason, you can always enroll for a certificate programme. This is equivalent to an associate degree as far as education and skills go. This can help you get your foot through the door. These courses being more hands on might be more beneficial considering the time taken for such a course.

Don’t stop with a certificate Programme

Get as much hands on experience as you can. By hands on, you should try to get a job at a dentist’s or the sort where you can put your skills to use. Hone your skills and find better places to do your job. The good thing is there are always better places and people looking for skilled people.

While it may be true that you cannot start at the top, you can always work your way up to the top. Your career is long. The initial hard work will pay off in the end.

What about the non-textbook side of things?

Beauty in the details

A dental ceramic technician is expected to pay attention to even minute details. A technician is an artist of sorts. He creates something new for each client, each day. Each patient is different and for making the perfect prosthetics that fit well, a dental ceramic technician must have an eye for detail.

The fine adjustments are what makes the prosthetics perfect. You’re giving them a second shot at a bog broad smile. It’s a huge responsibility. But, it holds that artistic satisfaction. And, a satisfied client is sure to boost your reputation.

Play the part

Being a dental technician of any sort comes with it’s fair deal of stress and having to deal with things. You have to act as a mediator in addition to being good at what you’re supposed to be. You have to know a client’s needs and make the prosthetics for them accordingly.

Patients may also be more comfortable with the technicians than they are with the dentist. So, you must convey what the patient can’t to the dentist. You must also provide support to a patient undergoing an operation. Finally, you have to act as a guide. You have to show the clients the right way to use the prosthetics that you made.

Making sure of this is very important as it would help the patients and also minimise damage to the prosthetics which can avoid another visit from the client. A client who comes often is not the most satisfied client.

Your decisions matter

Sometimes only you can decide what is best during a particular situation. Some problems may be one of a kind. So, you have to call the shots during those times. Your decisions are very important. So being logical and wise is very important to being a dental ceramic technician.

Hands of steel

You can’t get fidgety with your hands when you’re a dental ceramic technician. People rely on the steadiness of your hand. A steady hand is more capable of producing the best prosthetics as it’s all about the detail. Your precision, your skill with the tools, all of that will determine your level as a dental ceramic technician.

You must be versatile and have amazing knowledge of your work tools. You and the tool are not two, but one, in the process of making a prosthetic. Your versatility is an asset. So is your knowledge.

There’s no need to worry about the salary either. You’ll be making six figures per year on average. This is once you’ve had quite a few years under your belt.

How and where can you enroll for those courses and degree programmes that we mentioned before? Cochin Dental Institute, one of the best dental colleges in Cochin, Kerala is offering the best ceramic technician courses in Kerala. It will definitely be worth your time and effort.

They have been training dental ceramic technicians for years. The results they produce are awesome. You can always head on over to their website and see for yourself the testimonials of the alumni. Cochin Dental institute is undoubtedly the one of best dental college in Kerala for dental technician Courses.

There is certain equipment that is crucial in a dental lab. It is vital for every aspiring dental lab technician to know about the different tools and technology that are employed in their labs. The following article provides insight into the essential tools and technology that are used by dental lab technicians. The work is very tactile, combining both artistry and technology, it falls into two categories: restorative dentistry and orthodontics.

RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY

This happens when a patient’s teeth are damaged due to tooth decay, disease such as periodontitis or an accident. In this case the affected tooth must be replaced so that the patient can function normally. The job of the lab technician here is to make the replacement tooth or prosthetic.

Creating the best dental work requires a certain amount of skill from both the dentist and their laboratory. Sometimes restoration can be achieved in the chair and sometimes they have to be sent to the laboratory. Whether you are a dentist or a lab technician, knowing the right equipment can make all the difference.

TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGY THAT ARE ESSENTIAL AND IMPROVE RESTORATIVE WORKFLOW

  • HAND TOOLS

  1. Facebow and Articulator– A facebow and articulator go hand in hand. The facebow is the clinical piece used for the patient’s mouth while the articulator is mostly on the laboratory side. It allows for a true representation of the patient’s mouth in the model phase that allows the laboratory to know how the teeth come together and also predict how the jaw moves and at what angle.
  2. Carving Tools– These are used for sculpting wax and can be used for specifically for defining details in dentures. It is used to carve around the gingival crest of a denture. Another tool is the Lecron carver used for denture base creation.
  3. Leaf Gauge– It is an inexpensive tool comprised of several thin leaves and is used to measure the bite.
  4. Acrylic Mixer– This is used to ensure that the resulting product is smooth and bubble free.
  5. Clamps– Laboratories depend on clamps for fabricating restorations and can also be used for specialized, specific functions. It also helps make cementing hybrid implant cases quite a bit easier.
  6. Diamond-impregnated Rubber Wheels- It helps restorations get a smooth finish.

  • DIGITAL WORKFLOW

  1. Digital Cameras– It can help doctors and labs communicate on cases. The pricier DSLR cameras are the best but a good enough camera in your pocket will suffice.
  2. STL Viewers– When digital dentistry cases are being designed on a computer, the resulting file (an STL file) can be shared with the rest of the team. While the file is normally viewed on a computer, viewing can be made even easier with an STL viewer. The viewer can be downloaded even on a phone, improving communication between doctors and labs.
  3. Intraoral scanner– Doctors are foregoing traditional impression materials and using intraoral scanners to take digital impressions. The scanners are praised for their ease of use and accuracy. It is much better in taking digital impressions instead of the traditional ones.
  4. Virtual Prescriptions– The intraoral scanner allows you to send a virtual prescription to the laboratory, giving the labs an understanding of what the doctor wants.
  5. Conebeam scanners– When conebeam computed scanners are employed, they provide a patient’s anatomy in detail, allowing the doctor to see inside the patient’s skull, providing a detailed view of the patient’s anatomy. They are expensive but useful, especially for implant placement, because they show exactly where the implant should go. Since the scan is digital, it can be merged with other data to help doctors and laboratories create the best restorations.
  6. Chairside milling system– It is used to grind away or carve a dental restoration from a block of ceramic or any other material with help of a rapidly spinning bur.
  7. 3D Printing– It is used to produce orthodontic models, highly accurate crown and bridge models, surgical guides, retainers and aligners, biocompatible dental products such as dentures, splints etc.

  • OTHER TECHNOLOGY

  1. CAD/CAM– It is the fashion in restorative dentistry but it’s not the only technology available in the office or the lab. This system allows the dentist to create a finished inlay in as little time as possible.
  2. Shade Matching– When restoring the tooth in a dental clinic, colour matching of dental restorative materials with the patient’s tooth is performed using a shade guide. The shade guide is a standard model consisting of several shade tabs based on the colour distribution of natural teeth. A digital shade matching system removes the potential for human errors.

ORTHODONTIC DENTISTRY

It is a branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of mal-positioned teeth and jaws and misaligned bite patterns.

Orthodontic technician is tasked with the job of manufacturing well fitted orthodontic appliances and devices that help correct malocclusions or misaligned dental arches that result in improper bites. They also construct devices such as:

  • Palatal expanders
  • Headgear
  • Retainers
  • Separators or spacers
  • Elastics
  • Braces
  • Pendulums
  • Splints
  • Bite openers
  • Positioners
  • Clasps
  • Twin block appliances

To construct such devices, orthodontic technicians use technological manufacturing equipment, such as computer-aided milling equipment, to manipulate wax and metal-based materials with accordance to measurements from moulds or impressions of patient teeth. Orthodontic technicians must know to use this equipment to form, grind, polish, carve and assemble appliances from doctor instructions and specifications perfectly. Orthodontic technicians usually test appliances for conformance to measurement specifications using articulating equipment. Once appliances are installed in patient mouths, orthodontic technicians may also be responsible for performing necessary repairs to maintain the appliance efficacy and the patient’s comfort. Orthodontic technicians usually work in laboratories, but they may also directly work with patients in orthodontic offices depending on their specific position. In such situations, orthodontic technicians may assess patient needs, take measurements, create moulds or assist doctors with various duties.

How to create a well-aligned Smile through Orthodontics?

Before knowing about how to create a well-aligned smile, you should definitely be understood on Orthodontics. What is orthodontics? Orthodontics is a treatment for irregularities in Jaws and teeth. Then how is this irregularity formed? The irregularity is formed due to many reasons. Early loss of a baby or premature tooth is one common reason. And maybe due to the improper restoration of teeth such as filling or gum disease. These are the major reason for the formation of irregularities.

Nearly, 35% of orthodontic people in our country are adults. But only 7% of that preference for a treatment for this problem. But 15% of teenagers ready for orthodontics. This increasing rate is not that much pleasing for us.

No matter what your age is orthodontic can protect your bites and maximize your teeth strength. Finally gives you a well-aligned smile forever.  The treatment involves repositioning of teeth and underlying roots, which provide better supports for the crown of the tooth.  Orthodontics can also enhance your facial appearance. It reshapes your jaws, lip and neck. In addition to this well-aligned tooth provide easiness to maintain oral hygiene.

Procedures of Orthodontics

Assume that you are a candidate for orthodontics, then your orthodontics evaluate your bite. And use several methods to develop a treatment plan.

  • An oral, facial and functional examination
  • Intraoral and facial photographs.
  • Panoramic and cephalometric X-rays.
  • Impressions of teeth and bite for models

An orthodontist evaluates your dental records, conduct a clinical assessment then takes X-rays of your mouth and head. Makes models of the teeth by generating an accurate impression of them. These results of the reviews are studied in order to formulate the perfect treatment plan.

In the next visit, again review the treatment plan and calculate the number of months required to effectively execute the plan. The period of orthodontics treatment varied according to your age. Along with the age, it depends on how perfectly you are following the treatment instructions. Another fact, for younger patients the response is much easier and faster than well-matured adults. The bone supporting younger teeth is more pliable than the bone supporting older teeth. Moreover, adults tend to follow treatment more seriously than teens.
